Join a Writing Organization

Joining Central New York Romance Writers (CNYRW) was the best thing that I could have done. This group of incredible writers welcomed us with open arms. It didn’t matter if you were already an established published author, seasoned writer looking to sell that first manuscript, or a novice writer looking to learn. Everyone was eager to share their knowledge and experiences.

Joining a writer’s group can offer so many benefits. I look back on the manuscripts that I had written before I joined this group and laugh. I have learned so much. While yes, the majority of writers in this group are focused on writing romances of some kind, the main focus is on writing as a craft. There are basic writing premises to creating that great novel regardless of what genre you are focused on.  Through workshops and conferences I have learned so much about “the art” of writing a good story. Yes, there is a formula and yes, it is “an art”. From POV to character development  to starting your story in the right place, there is so much to learn.

Then of course there is also learning to navigate the world of publishing because it is a business and you need to make sure your best interests are covered. Should you get an agent or not, what publishers should you submit your work to, what things do you need to consider in a contract, what kind of questions should you ask, and the list goes on and on. This is your hard work and future, be sure you know what you are doing.

There are so many organizations out there that can help you achieve your writing dreams. What writing organization is helping you?

I read your article on the front cover in the Scotsman paper a few weeks ago. I’m from pennellville also, and just starting to learn about being published, thank you for your insight about where to start, I would also like to talk in person if thats possible? I went to the CNYRW website but didn’t see any places, or times? I looked on the liverpool calendar and didn’t see the group listed for a time? can you help with the April 21st date? Do you know of any other writing conferences coming up in the area?

    • Hi Lorraine,

It’s so nice to hear from you. I’m glad you found the information on my blog helpful. I remember when I first took writing a novel seriously. I had no idea where to go. That’s when a good friend told me about CNYRW. CNYRW meets at the Liverpool Library, I can’t remember the room name but it’s the first one on the left when you enter. Our workshops begin at 2 p.m. This is the best group I’ve belonged to. Regardless of what you write, our workshops apply to any genre. The April 21st meeting is going to be a roundtable discussion on Characterization. We have so many incredibly talented writers that I think this will be a fantastic discussion even though it is not a formal program.

I would love to talk more with you on this. You can email me at regina.drumm@drumm-marketing.com
I hope I’ll have more useful informaton for you on publishing. There is so much to learn and I’m happy to share my knowledge and experiences.
